Kolkata police have arrested 16 people, including 10 women, for allegedly running a fake call center in the name of Jio company and cheating citizens out of lakhs of rupees. The Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police raided the center, located at the Martin Burn Business Park office in Salt Lake Sector Five, and recovered several electronic gadgets and INR 500,000 in cash.
The center was allegedly being run illegally for two years by a company named VHM Business Services Pvt Ltd, initially operated by Dev Das and Harini Nath. The police investigation revealed that the company did not possess any documents of its own and could not produce a contract with the building owner. People from various states, including Assam and Meghalaya, were being called by the fake center and told that the phone was made by Reliance Jio company. The callers, sometimes posing as representatives of Jio Future Care or Jio Financial Loan Department, would then cheat the common people out of lakhs of rupees in the name of providing loans.
During the raid, the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police arrested the two leaders of the organization, Das and Nath, from the office of the company. They also seized two computers, 23 mobile phones, an Apple iPad, 24 keypad mobile phones, 14 debit cards, four attendance registers, and cash worth INR 564,500. The arrested individuals will be presented in the Bidhannagar court today, where the police will request their custody for further investigation.
The Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police are also probing who else may be connected with this gang.
